Here is our weekly report on the most important news and events that took place in Hungary.

First, on 3-4 December 2019, world leaders gathered for Nato's 70th anniversary summit, which was held in the United Kingdom. Both Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó were present and addressed the main issues the organisation faces. According to the Foreign Minister, „preserving NATO as the world’s most successful defence alliance is essential, especially now that terrorists are mounting fresh challenges by adapting new technologies.” Regarding migration Szijjártó highlighted how waves of uncontrolled illegal migration offer terrorist organisations opportunities to spread extremist ideologies all over the world along with terrorists themselves.

First of all, the week started by remembering a somber day in Hungary's history. His speech resonated with PM Orbán's words, as the Primes Minister claimed for the first time, that NATO finally recognised mass migration coming from the south as a security challenge. In a short video statement Orbán also underlined the significance of the summit, calling the shift in focus a great development and a serious step forward.

Last, Justice Minister Judit Varga was interviewed by the iconic German daily newspaper die Welt, where she claimed only two politicians have a stable vision for Europe, one of them being Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. According to Varga the other politician is the current french president Emmanuel Macron. In her interview she spoke positively about Ursula von der Leyen, the new President of the European Commission and also mentioned the success of the Hungarian government after the EU’s enlargement portfolio was handed to Olivér Várhelyi.
