Here is our weekly report on the most important news and events that took place in Hungary.

Once again, Hungary hit the headlines in Europe for many good reasons.

First, less than a week ago, Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán gave his speech at the 28th congress of Fidesz and Hungarian Civic Union, where he touched upon many important issues and spoke of challenges that are awaiting the government and the Hungarian people.

Besides, PM Orbán also held a joint press conference with the Finnish PM, Antti Rinne, where he made his stance very clear regarding the debate on whether to make EU payments subject to the rules of law or not. According to him, Hungary will not seek to tighten the conditions of these payments, because “when they question the rule of law, they step on our honour”.

Hungary is once again in the focus of Europe

Hungary managed to hit the headlines in Europe for numerous good reasons. For example, our country was able to boast about Budapest again, given that the capital proved to be one of the most sought after destination for tourists in the Central and Eastern European region, beating the likes of Vienna and Prague.

Second, according to CNN Travel, the Hungarian passport is one of the most powerful one in the world, based on the number of countries where it is accepted. To be specific, our passport managed to rank as the 10th most useful one, beating the likes of Estonia, Poland, Monaco, Croatia and Romania. Interestingly enough, Iceland, Latvia and Slovenia shared our 10th place, while countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq came last.

Last, it is safe to say, that the opposition’s mayoral election campaign – that is slowly coming to an end – is shambolic. The so-called candidates, Gergely Karácsony, Róbert Puszér and Krisztián Berky are far too busy with criticising each other, leaving the incumbent mayor, István Tarlós looking more than fit for his job.
