Here is our weekly report on the most important news and events that took place in Hungary.

Another busy week has passed by, with plenty of good news to feast upon.

First, Hungary managed to move up a spot in the ranking of annual competitiveness worldwide. According to the World Economic Forum’s statistics, our country came 47th in a list consisting of 140 nations, meaning that Hungary possesses the 24th most competitive economy within the EU.

MTI, the Hungarian newswire stated: the country’s score on this year’s Global Competitiveness Index was 65,1 on a scale of 0-100, up from 64,3 a year earlier. Hungary’s score for institutions rose to 55,7 from 54,2, while its score for infrastructure climbed to 80,7 from 78,4. The score regarding macroeconomic stability remained unchanged at 90,0.

Moving forward!

Once again, Hungary hit the headlines in Europe for many good reasons. First, less than a week ago, Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán gave his speech at the 28th congress of Fidesz and Hungarian Civic Union, where he touched upon many important issues and spoke of challenges that are awaiting the government and the Hungarian [...]

Second, Minister of the Prime Minister's Office Gergely Gulyás reiterated Hungary’s view regarding migrant quotas, which is still a hugely popular idea within the EU. In his words:

Hungary is willing to cooperate in the deportation of illegal immigrants, but will not invest in their accommodation.

Last, PM Viktor Orbán once again was in the focus of international events: on Thursday he welcomed Eric Stewart, President of the US-Hungarian Business Council and other participants of the business delegation. The event reflected upon the strong economic and political ties between the US and Hungary.

A day later, on Friday the Hungarian PM travelled to the Italian capital in order to meet with Italy’s iconic politician, Silvio Berlusconi. During the visit Antonio Tajani, Forza Italia’s vice-president was present too. The three discussed European politics and the blossoming relationship between the two nations. Both Berlusconi and PM Orbán expressed their satisfaction regarding the meeting in Rome.
